It is funny you say that about the pitch lines. My original design had those in there, but it was removed to allow for the flexibility of cricket and rugby aswell. Footy Tweets, Rugby Tweets and Cricket Tweets are all now live, and growing quite quickly in popularity.

Nice design.

The first thing that comes to my mind with grass background is, why not use a close up image of the lines on the football pitch, something like the below image image springs to mind (although this is actually a bad example, but you should get my meaning).
